    From 1620's till American Independence, 'transportation' was used in lieu of imprisonment or execution for many convicts, including Christian Masterton of Edinburgh, sent to the American colonies as a whore.

    As a captain in the British Army fighting against the Jacobite 'rebels', James Masterton witnessed the rout of the British forces at the Battle of Falkirk.

    Allan Masterton, writing master at Edinburgh High School, became a great friend of Robert Burns and composed music for 'Willie Brew'd a Peck o' Maut'.
