From 1620's till American Independence, 'transportation' was used in lieu of imprisonment or execution for many convicts, including Christian Masterton of Edinburgh, sent to the American colonies as a whore.

In 1690 Adam Masterton of Grange petitioned for the restoration of lands to John Philip, nephew of a minister imprisoned on the Bass Rock in 1683, probably as one of the covenanting ministers, or 'Society Men', imprisoned during the 'Killing Time'.

Alexander Masterton, son of the Provost of Linlithgow, was bosun on the 'Caledonia', one of five ships that set sail from Leith to colonise the isthmus of Darien in central America. The scheme failed and many investors, including Alexander's father, lost their investment.
