474 ministers sign the Deed of Demission that creates the Free Church of Scotland. Across Scotland, elders, like Alexander Masterton of Larbert, had to decide where their consciences lay. Alexander's son William became a Free Church minister.

Between 1845 and 1894, parochial boards administered the Poor Law (Scotland) Act and appointed Inspectors of Poor, such as Robert Masterton in Dunbar, to administer relief.
